Typology of Ukrainian-Language Lexicographic Works of Professor Olexandra Serbenska
Abstract
Research methodology. The article typologizes a multifaceted study of lexicography from 1975 to 2019, a representative of the Center for Ukrainian Lexicography in Lviv, Professor of Journalism at Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, Academician of the Academy of Sciences of Olexandra Serbenska, an anatomist, comparison of dictionaries, directories revealed typological features, characterized all the lexicographic theoretical, applied, critical works of the professor.
To establish the types of lexicographic works of Professor Olexandra Serbenska, a complex analysis, descriptive, analytical and descriptive, evaluative, quantitative, statistical, comparative, comparative, typological analysis and rating method were applied. Prof. Olexandra Serbenska’s applied lexicographic works are divided into applied (dictionaries, directories), theoretical (scientific articles, scientific reports), critical (dictionaries and other lexicographic works).
In order to accumulate scientific facts, we used the method of studying bibliographic lists of publications of Professor Olexandra Serbenska, the method of compiling a bibliography of sources related to the problem under study; citation method, annotation of the main content of lexicographic works.
Results. Applied lexicographic works of Professor Oleksandra Serbenska are divided into educational (small dictionaries, mini-dictionary and reference books), theoretical (scientific articles, scientific reports), critical (dictionary reviews and reviews of other lexicographic works). Prof. Olexandra Serbenska’s works on theoretical lexicography by genre traits were differentiated: on scientific, popular science articles, scientific reports and their affiliation to the lexicography subdivisions, critical lexicography subdivisions were established in reviews.
Novelty. It is for the first time typology of printed Ukrainian dictionaries, Professor Olexandra Serbenska’s manuals by presentation style, functions, purpose, volume, word count, vocabulary coverage, targeting, circulation, method of storing lexicographic information, mono / polyperspectivity, selection of units, edition, purpose, way of storing information, handling it.
Practical implications. The established typology of linguistic dictionaries of Professor Olexandra Serbenska will allow to carry out comparative studies of the same dictionaries of other authors, to evaluate their methods of description of vocabulary, to choose the most successful types of dictionaries for effective presentation of lexicographic information. The practical importance of the typology of dictionaries is determined by the possibility of unification and improvement of methods of compiling the same dictionaries.
