Political Discourse in the Christian Press (by the Case of «Ruslan» (1897–1914, Austro-Hungarian Galychyna))
Abstract
Research methodology. The method of the analysis of the printed source («Ruslan» newspaper’s articles) and the synthesis of the acquired material was used during the research. The principle of historicism is also used.
Results. On the basis of the analysis of the «Ruslan» newspaper’s content, the conclusion about the concordance between the content and the direction of the publications to the historical circumstances in which the Ukrainians and their political forces were in Austria-Hungary at the end of the XIXth – at the beginning of the XXth centuries is made. Both party and editorial policies of the edition were generally tolerant, the discussions with the opponents were conducted in the parliamentary form. At the same time, while the general compliance of the tolerant policy was initiated in 1897, it is possible to observe some of its changes and fluctuations – both on the exacerbation side (the beginning of the XXth century) and on the side of reciprocal reconciliation (before the First World War).
Opponents were given the opportunity to express their views on the pages of the publication. The values which were declared as the Christian and the conservative were held up steadily due to the reason that Christian socials were an opportunistic party. At the same time, such a political force had significant opportunities under the framework of the Austro-Hungarian constitutional monarchy at the beginning of the XXth century. Unfortunately, not all of these opportunities were completely used both by the party’s leadership and the «Ruslan’s» editorial staff.
Novelty. A significant empirical material (facts and quotations taken from the «Ruslan» magazine, discovered and worked out by the author) was put into the scientific circulation. The concept of the editorial policy evolution during the considered period was formulated.
Practical significance. The results of the research can be used in the scientific researches (both of the Ukrainian press and of the Ukrainian history) of the relevant period. It can be also used for the teaching courses of the Ukrainian journalism history.
Key words: Western Ukraine at the end of the XIXth – the beginning of the XXth centuries, social-Christian movement, periodicals, «Ruslan».
