O. В Bohuslavskyi

Abstract

The purpose of the study is to determine the peculiarities of the formation and development of the Ukrainian periodical in emigration, which provides for the systematization and introduction into scientific circulation of factual material on the activities both of the «Novyi Shliakh» editorial staff and socio-political environment that influenced the information and ideological policy of the publication.

Research methodology. The basis of the study is axiological, culturological, and systemic approaches; methods of historicism, analysis, synthesis, and generalization are used.

Results. The period of formation and development of the editorial staff of the «Novyi Shliakh» weekly of 1930-1941 is outlined. The financial, economic, socio-political and social conditions of the beginning of the periodical’s functioning are clarified. The reasons for the low audience activity of Ukrainian settlers in Canada are identified. It is emphasized that the main merit in the process of formation of the weekly lies in the volunteer, unpaid work of the editorial team, which provided the basis for financial stability in the future. The mechanisms of expanding the readership network, attracting new authors are analyzed.

It was found out that it was the efforts of the editor M. Pohoretskyi, the head of the printing house I. Solianych and the directors of the publishing house V. Hultai, I. Huliai and O. Hryhorovych that created and strengthened the material and technical base of the publishing house, conducted advertising campaigns, carried out direct work to attract new subscribers and readers.

Novelty. For the first time, information on the period of formation and development of the Ukrainian-Canadian «Novyi Shliakh» weekly was analyzed and summarized.

Practical significance. The results of the research can be used in the process of studying the courses «History of Ukrainian Journalism» and «History of Publishing Business» within the «Journalism» specialty.

Keywords: «Novyi Shliakh», emigration, Ukrainian National Union, nationalism, editor, publisher, page, column, audience, subscription.
