Secondary Nomination as a Component of the Newspaper-Magazine (Media) Non-Fiction

S. Zharko, O. Terkhanova

Abstract

Novelty. In the article the stylistic parameters of the secondary nomination in the newspaper text are investigated. The importance and need for such a study are dictated by the activity of the secondary nomination in the newspaper non-fiction.

Research methodology. The paper uses methods of linguistic observation and descriptions related to the study of the visual and occasional motivation of the secondary nomination. In the article, the method of the component analysis was used sporadically, which allowed to penetrate into the «deep» semantics of the secondary nomination and determine its internal form.

Results. A look at the phenomenon of the secondary nomination as a constituent of a particular communicative-style system – the newspaper-magazine non-fiction –  leads to the separation of two parameters, which should characterize the secondary nominating in these text conditions: informative and appraisal. This principle is the basis for distinguishing ugly (actually informative) and figurative (estimated) communicative structures of the secondary nomination.

The first type of the secondary nomination in the newspaper non-fiction is represented by functions of full-lexical units and their combinations. As noted above, the phenomenon of the newspaper-magazine universalization is closely linked with the standardization of expression and the achievement of the expressive effect of text units. It is a derivational phrase (V. M. Nikitevych, A. S. Snitko). As a result of the merger of the semantic components of the compound, a composite name is formed, where the core noun denotes the substantive characteristic of the phenomenon, its integral sign, its dependent – its differential sign because of its attribution to another substance, and the adjective is an inseparable quality of the signified object. The new name (the result of the secondary nomination) certifies the discrepancy between the substantive semantics of the word as a component of the compound name and the conceptual content of the particular noun as a vocabulary unit. Further extraction is associated with the phenomenon of the abbreviation.

The second type of the secondary nomination in the newspaper non-fiction  is represented by the functions of figurative (estimated) communicative structures, nominations with emotional and expressive content, which, through the acquired connotations, express the socialized content of the statements. The paper focuses on such forms of shaped secondary nomination as metaphorical and metonymic phrases, periphrasis, phraseological units, etc. It is emphasized on the correlation of the tropical structure with the word or phrase, actualization of any quality, the object side or the concept that are described. At the heart of the secondary nomination of the second type is the figurative use of the word, the understanding of the denotation through the qualities associated with it, the properties indicated by other nominations.

The practical significance. The materials of the research can be used in modern linguistic didactics: for writing textbooks and training manual on functional stylistics, lexicology, semasiology, special courses on non-fiction functional style at faculties of journalism, as well as in lexicographic practice.

Key words: secondary nomination, newspaper-magazine non-fiction, connotation, derivative compounds, phraseological units; metaphorical and metonymic expressions.
