O. Bohuslavskyi

Abstract

Research methodology. The main research method is the analysis of materials of the Third Congress of Ukrainian Journalists of the USA and Canada.

Results. The purpose of the article is to highlight the course of the Third Congress of Ukrainian Journalists in the USA and Canada (September 23–24, 1972) as an unexplored historical event in the Ukrainian emigration journalistic environment.

Novelty. The article highlights the little-known historical event in the Ukrainian emigration journalistic environment: it explores both the course of the Third Congress of Ukrainian Journalists of the USA and Canada, and the range of questions raised at this event just as at the level of speeches and discussions during the Congress, so the later on at the examples of publications of Ukrainian press.

The impact of the regular journalistic congress execution on the internal self-organization of the journalistic environment was quite notable, as witnessed by both a large number of challenging issues faced by delegates and guests, and critical press publications.

The running of the next congress became an urgent need, because victorious publications in press after the two previous congresses rather quickly changed to an outspoken criticism of journalists and titles just as on the part of the public, so on the part of parties environment and religious communities. As it was stated by the Congress participants, the situation with the involving of the youth audience to reading remained complex, the problem of editions’ assimilation and switch to English language of publications intensified, which not only decimates the audience, but also cut the people from Ukrainian origins.

The range of problematic issues raised at this Congress, are topical in the modern Ukrainian realities: struggle for the audience, the youth in particular, language problem, oversaturation of press with political propaganda, violation of journalistic ethics standards etc.

The practical significance. The research results can be used during the development of events of formation of information culture in a state and individuals level.

Key words: congress, criticism, ethics, journalism, press, public opinion.
